Lifestyle Desk – Tea, pakodas and light showers… Monsoon season may seem quite pleasant, but taking care of hair during this time is also a big task. During the rainy season, humidity in the air increases, due to which hair starts looking dry, lifeless and sticky. In such a situation, managing hair becomes even more difficult.
Often, in a hurry to go to office or college, people tie wet hair tightly with a rubber band or apply a clip. Although this method may seem easy and time-saving, this habit can be harmful for wet hair. To keep hair healthy and strong, it is important to understand what problems tying wet hair can cause.

Why are wet hair more weak?
Hair is more fragile when wet than in its normal state. After applying water, the outer layer of the hair i.e. the cuticle lifts a little. In such a situation, pulling the hair, tying it tightly or combing it vigorously can increase the risk of hair breakage.
If wet hair is kept tied with a rubber band or clip for a long time, there is continuous strain on the hair. Especially if the rubber band is too tight, it can increase the problem of hair breakage. Doing this repeatedly can affect the length of the hair as well as the hairline.
Problems increase in monsoon
Due to humidity during the rainy season, hair does not dry completely for a long time. Keeping wet hair tied can retain moisture and sweat in the scalp for a long time. This can cause problems like itching, discomfort and bad smell on the scalp. For those whose scalp is already oily, this problem may be felt more.
Apart from this, frizziness can increase in hair due to humidity. In such a situation, repeatedly tying the hair tightly to maintain it can further increase the problem.
How to prevent hair breakage?
- In monsoon, it is most important to let the hair dry thoroughly before tying it. If time is short, dry the hair gently with a towel and if necessary, a hair dryer with cold or less hot air can be used.
- Also avoid combing wet hair immediately. If it is necessary to detangle the hair, then use a wide-toothed comb and slowly detangle the hair from the bottom.
- Instead of using very tight rubber bands to tie hair, using soft and loose hair ties or scrunchies can be a better option.
- Instead of continuously tying your hair tightly at one place, it can also be beneficial to keep changing hairstyles.
- Also, it is very important to keep the scalp clean during monsoon. If there is excessive accumulation of sweat and dirt, wash hair with mild shampoo as per need and apply conditioner mainly on the length and ends of the hair.
- Keep in mind, hair fall may be normal to some extent during monsoon, but if there is unusually excessive hair fall, persistent itching or sores in the scalp, it is better to consult a specialist.
