This week, as part of OneFootball’s collaboration series with Shoot Music, we spoke to an artist about his love for football.

The guest this time is Anton Eager, drummer of Merseyside indie rock band The Cheap Thrills and a Liverpool supporter.

When did you start supporting Liverpool and why?

I’ve supported Liverpool from the day I was born. My mum and dad still have my baby-sized 1995 Adidas home kit that they kept all these years. I grew up in a football-mad Liverpool family, hearing stories from my grandad, who had a season ticket for more than 60 years, and from my uncles, who followed the Reds across Europe in the 1970s and 1980s. For me, it was always going to be Liverpool.

What is your favourite memory of supporting Liverpool as a child?

Watching us win the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005 will always stay with me. I can still remember the excitement before the match and then being in tears at half-time. What followed showed me the real magic of football and captured the never-say-die spirit this city is known for.

A very close second would be being in the Kop that same season and watching Gerrard score that famous goal against Olympiacos to make it 3-1 and send us into the knockout stages. A lovely cushioned header.

What are your predictions for Liverpool this season?

It’s hard to say at this point, but Liverpool Football Club has to set its sights high. At the very least, I want us back in the top four, and I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get there. With a new manager and new signings, it may take a bit of time for everything to come together, but we need to start strongly from the off. There will be pressure on Iraola to get the side functioning as a unit quickly.

Do you think Andoni Iraola is a good replacement for Arne Slot?

I do. We owe Slot a lot, and winning the league was a huge achievement, but by the end it felt like the right moment for a change. It seemed he had lost the support of a large section of the fans and, from what it sounded like, perhaps some of the players as well.

Iraola comes across as strict and no-nonsense. More importantly, he appears to understand the club and what it means to the people of the city. Hopefully, we won’t see him out on the ale in Ibiza halfway through the season either!

Which new player do you think will have the biggest impact this season?

I think Jérémy Jacquet could make the biggest impact. He is still young, but he looks calm, confident and physically prepared for the Premier League. There will naturally be pressure on him, but if he settles in quickly, I think he could become a huge player for us and a real fan favourite. I’m also excited to see how Rio Ngumoha develops.
