In early 2022, Pham Thi Thanh An, the owner of a ramen restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, was falsely accused during a dispute within the Japanese expatriate community.

Refusing to back down, she presented evidence to clear her name, successfully defended her reputation, and secured a formal apology from her accuser.

Watching the ordeal unfold from Japan, 34-year-old Hiroshi found himself quietly admiring the resilient woman.

Two years later, Hiroshi quit his banking career and chose Vietnam for his first-ever trip abroad. He stopped by An’s ramen shop but was unable to meet her.

Later, he sent her a message saying: “The noodles were delicious. When I return to Vietnam in June 2025, I will visit your restaurant again.”

She replied politely.

True to his word, eight months later he messaged to say he was heading to Ho Chi Minh City and asked her for the address of her newly relocated eatery. On June 26, the two met for the first time. During his three days in town, he dropped by the restaurant every day, and An welcomed him with the warm hospitality she showed any visitor from abroad.

Before he departed, she gave him a decorative traditional conical leaf hat from the restaurant’s wall as a farewell keepsake. Hiroshi put it on and unexpectedly broke into tears, saying he had never met anyone who made him feel so welcome.

Back in Japan, Hiroshi set out to win An over, booking monthly round-trip flights to Ho Chi Minh City solely to see her. But, daunted by the geographic distance and cultural divide, she kept her guard up and gave him no encouragement.

When Hiroshi announced a mid-July visit, she lied and told him the restaurant was closed to avoid him. Undeterred, he rescheduled his flight for the end of the month, followed by return trips in August and September.

In September 2025, upon learning he had landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, An gave her staff the day off and shuttered the restaurant. That afternoon, she sent him a firm text that said: “I value you as a friend, and I do not want to jeopardize our good relationship. Please stop pursuing me.”

Upon receiving the message, he turned around and immediately boarded a flight back to Japan. He stayed away throughout October, leading her to believe she had finally shaken off her persistent suitor. But he continued to quietly keep up with her social media. Seeing that she remained single, he held on to hope.

In November and December 2025, he was back in Ho Chi Minh City. He spent his days sitting at her ramen restaurant and his evenings at her cocktail bar. She continued to keep her distance, leaving her staff to attend to him. His unwavering devotion eventually won over the employees, who began feeling sympathy for the Japanese man and urged their boss to reconsider.

Taking a closer look during one of his visits, An noticed Hiroshi had lost a significant amount of weight from six months earlier. When she asked him, he replied: “Because you once mentioned that I would look better if I lost some weight.”

An was stunned that he had taken an offhand remark to heart. During that same conversation, she learned that, several months earlier, he had already booked tickets for until February 2026 and had recently booked for the four months following that.

“I asked myself whether I would ever find another person in this lifetime with such genuine devotion,” An says. She started to have feelings for him.

When he returned in January 2026, she took the initiative and guided him around the city.

He confessed then that his previous excuses that he was drawn by “the food and people of Ho Chi Minh City” and had “a passion for flying” had been a facade. “If I had told you right away that I was flying over every month because I was in love with you, I was afraid it would overwhelm you. I preferred being around you as a friend rather than coming on too strong and pushing you away forever.”

The lifelong bachelor had also began to experience some unexpected changes: A chronic insomnia that had plagued him since the age of 14 simply vanished every time he visited Vietnam and met An, and he managed to sleep deeply.

In March 2026, he invited her to the resort island of Phu Quoc. Under a backdrop of fireworks, he presented her with a diamond ring and a bouquet of 209 roses and proposed to her.

That evening, she asked him: “What if I had said no?” He said he would have still given her the ring as a keepsake and simply bought another one for his next proposal. “I was determined to marry you.”

The couple celebrated their wedding in July 2026. Standing before hundreds of guests, he trembled so much that he could barely keep his vows steady in his hands.

Tears streamed down his face as he recalled the day he met the woman who transformed his world.

“Since June 26, 2025, my life has completely changed. Someone like me who had never traveled abroad flew to Ho Chi Minh City every month just to see you. Honestly, it was grueling, both physically and mentally. But I kept going because you are truly extraordinary to me.”

From the audience, An’s mother, siblings, and close friends chimed in with a shared message for the bride: “No more bullying Hiroshi.”
