A major update has come to light in the investigation into the incident of sudden altitude loss of about 300 feet in the Air India flight coming from Phuket to Delhi on August 4. Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released its preliminary report. In this, important information regarding the test of pilot-in-command has come to light. However, the complete picture of the case will become clear only after the final investigation report comes.

According to the preliminary report of the AAIB, the pilot-in-command (PIC)’s confirmatory test has returned a non-negative result for psychoactive substances. The Bureau has considered this a matter of serious concern and has recommended DGCA to take appropriate action on priority basis. However, the investigation is still going on. Apart from the technical aspects to the aircraft, other important matters are also being investigated. AAIB has released this report as per the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The final report will include all aspects of the investigation.

Suddenly the flight descended 300 feet

On August 4, Air India’s Airbus A320 aircraft, registration number VT-EXO, was on a flight from Phuket to Delhi. During the cruise phase, the altitude of the aircraft suddenly decreased by about 300 feet. During this period, information about injuries to at least 17 passengers and crew members was revealed. Some of the injured people also suffered spine and neck injuries. However, Air India had said that no one was seriously injured. Medical examination of needy passengers and crew members was done at the airport. The plane later reached Delhi safely.

AAIB considered it a serious incident

AAIB has classified this matter as a ‘serious incident’. Initially the incident was linked to turbulence, but during the investigation, attention was paid to technical aspects as well as the pilot’s test results. Now the final report is awaited.

What did Air India say on AAIB report…

Air India has welcomed the preliminary report of AAIB. The airline said it will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation and provide necessary information, including operational, maintenance and technical records. According to the company, security is its top priority. The airline said that its pilots have to undergo regular training, proficiency testing, medical tests and other regulatory assessments as per the rules.
