According to the English newspaper Times of India, Tilak Verma's name has emerged as a potential backup option of Shreyas Iyer in the top-6 batting lineup. A BCCI source told the newspaper, 'Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill feel that there is no backup ready for the middle order. Considering the possibility of injury to Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy, they want to bring in a player in the top order who can bowl at least 4 overs in ODIs.
In recent times, the team management has been forced to play either Washington Sundar or Akshar Patel at number 5-6, so that the playing XI can get balance.
