Shenzhen: India's experienced badminton player Kidambi Srikanth has created a big upset by performing brilliantly in the China Masters Super 750 tournament. On Thursday, Srikanth made it to the quarterfinals by defeating Canada's world number-9 player Victor Lai in straight games 21-18, 21-19.

33-year-old Srikanth showed patience and fighting spirit throughout the match. The Indian, who reached the final of the US Open Super 300 earlier this year, registered a crucial win against Lai, who had won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Srikanth will now face Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong in the quarterfinals.

Strong comeback after falling behind in the first game

Srikanth faced difficulties in the beginning of the first game. He was trailing 3-7 at one point, but taking advantage of Lai's mistakes, the Indian player leveled the score at 8-8.

After this, the Canadian player maintained a lead of two points till the interval and later made the score 15-11. Srikanth made a brilliant comeback from here and scored consecutive points and made the score 15-15.

He took the lead 18-16 with a brilliant cross-court smash. After this, Srikanth got three game points and he took advantage of the second game point to win the first game.

Didn't give up under pressure even in the second game

In the second game, Srikanth made some mistakes in the beginning and fell 5-9. Despite this he continued trying to make a comeback. After trailing 9-14, the Indian player hit two brilliant shots and took advantage of Lai's mistakes to take the score to 13-14.

As the match progressed, there was a tough fight between the two players and at one point the score became 18-18. After this Lai's shot went out. Srikanth again won the match point with a powerful shot and soon won the second game 21-19.

Tanvi Sharma's journey ended in the second round

India's Tanvi Sharma, who recently won the Taipei Open World Tour Super 300 title in women's singles, had to face defeat in the second round. World number-9 player Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan defeated Tanvi 17-21, 21-18, 16-21 and eliminated her from the tournament.

After losing the first game, Tanvi came back in the second game and took the match to the decider, but in the third game, Miyazaki took the lead and won the match.

Dhruv-Tanisha pair also out

India's Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also lost in the mixed doubles match. Chinese Taipei's pair of Liu Kuang Heng and Su Yin Hui knocked the Indian pair out of the competition after defeating them 21-18, 21-18.
