Everton have been approached over the possibility of signing a former Manchester United record-breaker, and a decision has now been made on whether to pursue a deal for the free agent.

Everton endured a deeply disappointing transfer window from the perspective of Toffees supporters, with frustration reaching its highest point on deadline day.

Not only did Everton part with their best player, Iliman Ndiaye, who joined Manchester City for what looked a relatively modest £65m fee, but the proposed £40m signing of Folarin Balogun also collapsed at the last moment.

With Beto sold to Fiorentina, neither Richarlison nor Balogun arriving, and a late loan approach for Joshua Zirkzee turned down by Manchester United, the only striker David Moyes is now able to call upon is Thierno Barry.

Everton are still able to look at the free-agent market, as unattached players can be signed outside the transfer window.

According to our colleagues at TEAMtalk, Everton are one of several Premier League clubs who have been contacted over the chance to sign Anthony Martial.

The report explained: ‘Before the transfer window closed, intermediaries made contact with a number of clubs in England to make them aware that Martial would be open to a return to the Premier League.

‘And they claim that Everton, Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur are among those who have all been spoken to in recent days about the possibility of signing the former United forward.’

Martial, now 30, became the most expensive teenage signing in football history at the time of his move to Manchester United in 2015.

Since leaving the Red Devils in 2024, he has played for AEK Athens in Greece and, most recently, Monterrey in Mexico.

Martial’s time at Monterrey was a poor one, with the French forward scoring only once in 20 appearances.

The striker left the club by mutual consent in June this year and has remained without a team ever since.

Even so, despite Everton’s urgent need for back-up in attack, a move for Martial appears very unlikely.
