A very important news has come out for the customers of State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest government bank. If you are a customer of SBI and use UPI (Unified Payments Interface) service for daily transactions, you have to be careful while doing digital transactions on September 4. SBI has officially announced that on September 4, their UPI services will be temporarily closed for a period of time.

SBI has alerted its millions of customers through a post on its official social media platform ‘X’ (earlier Twitter). The bank has said that regular maintenance work will be carried out to make the digital payment system more robust and secure. Due to which customers will not be able to use UPI for some time.
When will the UPI service be closed?
According to the official information provided by the bank, UPI services will be suspended on September 4 (Friday) midnight from 12:30 pm to 1:15 am. This means that customers will not be able to send or receive money through any UPI platform (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or YONO SBI) for a total of 45 minutes. The bank has appealed to customers to plan their digital transactions in advance during this period to avoid any inconvenience.
What to do in an emergency? Here is the option
Sometimes a medical or other emergency may arise at night, where immediate online payment becomes necessary. Considering such situation, SBI has suggested the customers to use ‘UPI Lite’. Even though the main UPI server is under maintenance, customers will be able to seamlessly complete small transactions through UPI Lite.
How does UPI Lite work?
UPI Lite is a special feature designed for small amount transactions, where the customer does not need to repeatedly enter the UPI PIN while making payments.
Transaction Limit: With SBI UPI Lite, you can make a payment of up to 1000 rupees at a time.
Maximum Balance: Customers can maintain a maximum balance of Rs 5000 in this on-device wallet.
If you think you might need to make a payment on the night of September 4, it is imperative to add money to your UPI Lite account in advance.
Such maintenance breaks are part of the normal process for protecting customer data and transactions in the banking system. SBI has scheduled this operation at midnight so that customers are least affected. However, as a precaution customers should avoid making large payments during this 45 minute period and use other options like UPI Lite or Net Banking/Credit Card for necessary transactions.
