Napoli have confirmed that Scott McTominay will undergo a heart procedure to correct a minor medical issue detected recently. The former Manchester United midfielder has made a huge impact in Italy since his high-profile transfer, but he is now set for a short spell out of action while the condition is treated.

The Scotland international will temporarily step away from club duties in Italy to undergo the medical procedure. Napoli have announced that the 29-year-old midfielder needs surgery in the coming days to correct a "mild benign arrhythmia".

The former United player has become an important figure since his £25 million move in 2024, winning the Serie A title during an extremely successful spell in Italy. Medical experts have played down fears over the long-term seriousness of the issue, indicating that the condition is fairly common among athletes and will not put his professional career at risk.

His latest domestic appearance came in the surprise home defeat to Como at the weekend. The Scottish midfielder has already registered 82 appearances and 27 goals for the Italian giants, in addition to 73 caps and 15 goals for his national team.

Napoli moved swiftly to explain the reason behind the midfielder's absence, confirming that he will receive treatment shortly and is expected to miss the upcoming fixtures.

In an official club statement released on Tuesday, Napoli said: "Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break."

Before the heart issue was made public, Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri had spoken about the player's condition after the defeat to Como. The Italian coach disclosed that his midfield mainstay had already been dealing with a minor physical problem.

Allegri said: "McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he's been training on a limited basis. Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible."

McTominay's absence is a major setback for Allegri, who is dealing with a difficult opening phase of his tenure. Napoli were unable to retain their title after finishing runners-up last season before dismissing Antonio Conte, leading to a dramatic summer of change both in the dugout and within the squad.

A number of high-profile players left the club, including Romelu Lukaku, Giovanni Simeone and Miguel Gutierrez. In response, the Serie A club completed the permanent signing of Rasmus Hojlund from United and also brought in Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile on a season-long loan.

In spite of the major transfer activity, Allegri's team have found it difficult to build early momentum. They are currently 10th in the Italian top flight, having recorded one win and one defeat from their opening two league matches.

Napoli now face a demanding sequence of four matches before the upcoming international break, which they must tackle without their midfield anchor. A major domestic clash against Serie A champions Inter awaits this Saturday, followed soon after by a high-stakes Champions League meeting with Arsenal.

After further domestic tests against Bologna and Fiorentina, Allegri will hope to have his midfield star back available. If his recovery progresses as expected, McTominay could make his much-awaited return against Frosinone on October 10.
