Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that private two-wheeler vehicle owners can be allowed to run bike taxis. He has appealed to the state governments to allow such services in their respective states.

Nitin Gadkari said that private two-wheeler vehicle owners have been allowed to carry passengers through bike taxis, but some states are still not allowing such services. He appealed to the states to move forward in this direction. According to Gadkari, transport is a state subject, hence the decision to implement bike taxi will have to be taken by the states. He added that this can create a new source of income for people especially in rural areas.

8 crore people can get employment

Gadkari had claimed that promoting bike taxi services could create livelihood opportunities for about 8 crore people. This can be especially beneficial in areas where employment options are less. However, the type of permits, insurance and other rules applicable to bike taxis will depend on the respective state rules. Therefore, it is not appropriate to immediately assume permission to run bike taxis from private bikes in every state just on the basis of the statement of the Minister.

Strict action against those who break traffic rules

Gadkari also gave a big update regarding road safety. He said that the government is preparing to amend the Motor Vehicle Act. Under this, a negative points system may be introduced for drivers who repeatedly break traffic rules. In this system, negative marks will be given for every violation. If points are accumulated up to a certain limit, the driving license can be suspended or even cancelled.

Emphasis on drivers' health also

Gadkari also started a pilot project named “Suraksha”. Under this, free medical examination and counseling will be provided to drivers, construction sector workers and hazardous workers associated with highway and mining projects. Initially this program will be implemented in an area of ​​about 150 km in Nagpur-Kamathi NH-44 section and Chandrapur mining area in Maharashtra and the target is to reach 10,000 people. Gadkari said that the health of drivers, especially eye examination, is very important for road safety.
