Manchester United have finalised a loan transfer one day after the transfer window closed in England.
As reported on deadline day, Chido Obi had attracted interest from Eredivisie side Willem II. The move was completed today, with the transfer window in the Netherlands remaining open for an extra day.
The 18-year-old has seen his first-team opportunities dry up since last season, and the Red Devils decided the former Arsenal youngster would benefit more from playing senior football elsewhere as part of his development.
As revealed by the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano, the Manchester United academy graduate has completed his medical with the Dutch club and signed a straight loan deal.
There is no option to buy included in the agreement, and the Denmark Under-21 international is expected to return to Old Trafford next year.
“Manchester United striker Chido Obi has completed his loan move to Willem II after medical in the Netherlands.
“Deal confirmed, straight loan,” Romano wrote.
After making eight first-team appearances under Ruben Amorim, Chido Obi was made to turn out for the Under-18s and Under-21s last season because United were knocked out of both cup competitions at the first attempt.
Even so, he impressed by scoring 20 goals in all competitions and also providing six assists.
Aside from his goals, United coaches were also pleased with the progress he made in his off-the-ball work rate.
It is clear the young Dane has moved beyond academy football, and a loan spell in the Eredivisie could do him a world of good.
Alexander Isak is one notable player to have spent time at the Koning Willem II Stadion on loan. In fact, his outstanding run of form there helped revive his career.
United will be hoping for something similar from Chido Obi. With Joshua Zirkzee expected to leave next season, the 20-time English league champions will need back-up for Benjamin Sesko.
A fully fit and firing Chido Obi may yet prove to be the ideal solution. The focus now is on him going to Tilburg and making the most of the opportunity.
