What causes petrol and diesel prices to rise?

While there is currently no change in petrol and diesel rates, there are specific reasons when prices do increase. India imports approximately 85% of its crude oil requirements from abroad. A rise in crude oil prices in global markets leads to higher petrol prices domestically. Furthermore, the excise duty levied by the Central Government and the VAT imposed by state governments effectively double the price. Additionally, oil transactions in the international market are conducted in US dollars; the weakening of the Indian Rupee against the dollar makes imports more expensive.
