KOLKATA, Sep 2:
Bristi Mukherjee, 28, niece of Trinamool Congress supremo and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, was found hanging at her residence in Birbhum district on Tuesday, police said.
Mukherjee, daughter of Banerjee’s maternal cousin Nihar Mukherjee, was found in a room on the second floor of her house at Kusumba village in the Rampurhat area.
Police said her body was sent to the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination and an investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.
Family members said Mukherjee had been under considerable personal stress. They said she had lost her Group C job at Bolpur High School following a court order cancelling recruitments in government-aided schools over alleged irregularities.
She was also undergoing divorce proceedings, according to her family.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are questioning family members as part of the investigation. Officials said no conclusion would be drawn until the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries are completed.
