The long-running water diplomacy between India and Pakistan has taken a new and extremely dramatic turn, which has intensified geopolitical turmoil at the international level. According to news agency PTI, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi admitted to the media that the Permanent Court of Arbitration has claimed that the treaty is still in force and its provisions are legally binding on both the countries. However, the reality is that India has already made it clear that such unilateral and partisan decisions have no legal standing for New Delhi. Frightened by this strict attitude of India, Pakistan has now started chanting that it will take every possible diplomatic measure to ensure that the rules of the treaty are followed. It is noteworthy that after the postponement of this treaty by India, Pakistan had approached the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration in March 2026 and requested that it give a decision on the current status of this treaty as soon as possible. This entire exercise of Pakistan was only so that it could put pressure on India by using international forums, but by rejecting the jurisdiction of the tribunal itself, the Indian government foiled all the moves of Pakistan in one fell swoop.
