NVIDIA DLSS 5 Revealed with Smarter Neural Rendering for Gaming Graphics
Samira Vishwas | September 2, 2026 8:24 PM CST

NVIDIA is expected to launch Nvidia DLSS 5 as the next major step in AI graphics for games. The rollout is scheduled for September 3 at 9 PM Pacific. NBA 2K27 will be the first title to bring DLSS 5 into the game. The new tech is called 3D-Guided Neural Rendering.

NVIDIA plans to make DLSS 5 available on GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop cards at launch. It will also be offered through GeForce NOW. Earlier DLSS releases focused on things like Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. DLSS 5 aims to push image quality further. NVIDIA calls it a new step in neural rendering. It is meant to improve lighting, materials, and other visual details while the game is running.

Developers will be able to adjust how much DLSS 5 is used, including which parts of the image get the effect. Still, the feature has drawn pushback. Some people worry about AI-made visuals, and others point to possible performance tradeoffs. NVIDIA says it will release DLSS 5.

What is Nvidia DLSS 5

NVIDIA DLSS 5 runs 3D-Guided Neural Rendering on a frame made by the game. NVIDIA states it uses game output data, then produces better lighting and material results. It takes in multiple kinds of information. NVIDIA lists color, motion vectors, surface details, and scene data. From that, it generates more lifelike lighting and material responses.

The company says the system can help with skin subsurface scattering. It can also improve light moving through hair and foliage. It may also raise ambient occlusion quality and contact shadows. NVIDIA notes it does not just swap out the usual rendering process. Instead, it acts as another stage on top of rasterization, ray tracing, and path tracing.

How NVIDIA DLSS 5 Improves Game Visuals

This new version shifts what DLSS is for. In past releases, the focus was mostly on boosting speed and rebuilding images. With DLSS 5, NVIDIA puts more weight on realism.

NBA 2K27 will be the first official showcase when NVIDIA DLSS 5 launches on September 3. Visual Concepts worked with NVIDIA to use the tech in the game. NVIDIA says its own RTX 5090 tests can hit about 370 fps at 4K on Ultra.

That includes ray tracing and all NVIDIA DLSS 5 features turned on. These numbers come from NVIDIA. They are not third-party benchmarks. DLSS 5 lets devs shape the output more closely.

Developers Get More Control Over DLSS 5 Effects

NVIDIA claims developers can pick from different AI models. They can also tune how much the effect changes a scene.

Structure Intensity is meant to steer finer details. That includes things like ambient occlusion, reflections, and subsurface scattering.

Tone Intensity targets broader lighting and color shifts.

Selective Application through Masking also happens at the semantic and engine levels. That can limit where DLSS 5 gets applied. A team might boost the look of background areas. At the same time, it can keep character models closer to the original. It also allows separate setups for gameplay and for cutscenes.

Final Thoughts

Nvidia DLSS 5 is set to arrive while the game world is still arguing about how much AI should shape visuals. NVIDIA is trying a specific angle here. It wants neural rendering to feel like an aid for artists, not a full swap for regular game work. September 3 matters.

That day will act like a real check. NBA 2K27 will let people see what this system can do inside a supported release. After that, it will come down to taking up other games.

If more studios use it, NVIDIA DLSS 5 could become a common graphics option. If not, it may stay a niche tool used by just a few titles.
