Argentina midfielder finally gets his move in a joint British-record transfer.
Chelsea have agreed to sell Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City in a £125 million package, a fee that would equal the British transfer record.
A breakthrough in talks has resulted in an agreement that matches Alexander Isak’s £125m switch from Newcastle to Liverpool exactly one year earlier.
The Argentina international’s transfer from Chelsea to City is expected to be the standout move on Transfer Deadline Day.
City had long been expected to pursue their interest in Fernandez right to the closing days of the transfer window and then try to get the deal completed.
Chelsea had previously set a deadline of 5pm BST on Friday, August 14, 2026 for offers for Fernandez to be submitted. At that stage, they had informed interested clubs of the payment structure they would accept and had indicated they were prepared to sanction a move for £120m.
After that deadline passed, Chelsea wanted more than £120m for the 2022 World Cup winner, and fresh terms had to be negotiated for the player.
City worked alongside Fernandez’s agent Javier Pastore and Chelsea to finalise an agreement for the 25-year-old, who did not feature in Chelsea’s last two matches against Luton Town and Brighton and had made it clear that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge.
When Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023, the transfer was worth £106.8m.
