The VfB Stuttgart forward will neither be available cheaply nor easy to sign, but Liverpool are in urgent need of reinforcements.

Liverpool are trying to pull off a late transfer swoop, with VfB Stuttgart in their sights as they look for a replacement for departed superstar Mohamed Salah.

The Reds have had a transfer window with mixed results — on one side, they saw a major exit of experienced names in Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konate this summer, and also came close to losing Cody Gakpo after a strong bid from Manchester City; on the other, they have recently completed the signing of PSG star Bradley Barcola.

The Frenchman is set to join Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, a soon-to-be-fit Hugo Ekitike and summer arrival Victor Munoz in a reshaped Liverpool attack, but Andoni Iraola’s side want to add one more forward and have now turned their attention to the Bundesliga.

According to Sky Germany, both Liverpool and Everton are pursuing Stuttgart forward Jamie Leweling, with Liverpool viewing him as a possible replacement for Salah.

The 25-year-old is under contract with the Bundesliga club until 2029, so any move is unlikely to be cheap or straightforward. However, what he produced during the 2025-26 season could make a late move worthwhile.

Leweling scored 11 goals in all competitions for Stuttgart in his most recent campaign, with seven of those coming in the Bundesliga, while he also registered 12 assists, including nine in the German top division.

The German forward was highly efficient in front of goal, missing only one Opta-defined Big Chance during the Bundesliga season and scoring his seven league goals from an xG of 4.31.

He also created the joint second-most Big Chances for Stuttgart, level on ten with Angelo Stiller and Maximilian Mittelstadt.

Beyond his goal contributions, Leweling was less impressive in one-on-one dribbling terms, managing only one dribble p/90. His physical game, though, stood out at a higher level, with nearly seven duels won p/90 at a success rate just under 50%.

Roma have shown strong interest in Leweling in recent hours, but no transfer has yet been finalised, and both Everton and Liverpool remain interested.

If the 25-year-old were to arrive at Anfield in a late move, he would offer a natural replacement for Salah on the right wing. He also has experience playing on the left.

By contrast, new signings Munoz and Barcola both prefer operating from the left flank; without Leweling, Liverpool would most likely have to rely on Gakpo when required if they fail to replace Salah’s vacant role.

The Reds have also shown interest in Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh, both players with proven Premier League experience, but neither move currently looks likely. If Liverpool are to land Leweling, it is almost certain to require a sizeable premium.
