Manchester City have agreed in principle a £65 million deal with Everton to bring in forward Iliman Ndiaye, according to The Athletic.

City made a major breakthrough in talks after switching their attention swiftly in the closing days of the transfer window.

Cody Gakpo had been their first-choice attacking target, but Liverpool were unwilling to sell because they could not secure a replacement. City then moved for Ndiaye.

The 26-year-old Senegal international is due to undergo a medical on Tuesday morning before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Ndiaye’s capacity to operate as a wide forward, an attacking midfielder or a second striker, along with his technical sharpness, dribbling and pressing, made him an attractive option for City.

He had earlier come close to joining Tottenham Hotspur, but City’s late move significantly changed the transfer picture.

The switch to City represents a major step forward in Ndiaye’s career.

With a club-to-club agreement now in place and the paperwork moving towards completion, City are not expecting any late problems.

If Ndiaye completes his medical as expected, he will be presented as City’s latest attacking addition, after Allan arrived earlier on Monday.

City also remain interested in Enzo Fernandez and have now begun direct discussions with Chelsea.

The Blues are not expected to reduce their £120m valuation of the Argentine, and it remains uncertain how far City are prepared to go after their recent spending spree.
