Lionel Messi brought an extraordinary international career to a close today, announcing his retirement soon after leading Argentina to a second straight World Cup final.

A shy teenager: the comparisons with Maradona never fully vanished.. but!

That shy teenager who left Rosario for Barcelona at 13, and who was at times portrayed in his own country as more Catalan than Argentine, became the unquestioned captain of the national team.

The tears and frustration from earlier failures gave way to songs, murals and celebrations. Comparisons with Maradona did not disappear, but they no longer carried the same accusatory tone. Messi became Argentina's Messi. He could have stopped there. Instead, he continued, moving from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami, helping Argentina defend the Copa América in 2024 before one final attempt at the World Cup.

By 2026, the explosive speed that once left defenders stranded had naturally diminished. He adapted.
