Speaking to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area on Monday at a charity event at the Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club, newly extension-eligible Warriors guard Stephen Curry reiterated that he has no desire to leave the only NBA team he has ever played for.

“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen,” Curry said.

On the heels of a disappointing 37-win season, Curry is entering a potential contract year, which has led some NBA pundits and fans to speculate that the two-time MVP might want to finish his career with a team that would give him a better chance of winning his fifth championship.

However, Curry – who officially became eligible to sign a contract extension on Saturday – made it clear he’s not seeking a change of scenery. He told Johnson that he’s looking forward to playing for a Warriors team that focused primarily on bringing back its own free agents this offseason rather than making major roster changes.

“The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season, and the fact that the team we’re coming back with has a lot of familiarity,” Curry said. “… The goal stays the same. Extension stuff, we’ll figure that out at the right time. But I’m ready for year 18. It’s kind of crazy that it’s been this long, and I’m still trying to play at a very high level to help us win, and I’ll be able to do my job.”

Curry, who will earn roughly $62.6MM in 2026/27, is eligible to sign a two-year extension worth up to $136.7MM. He isn’t permitted to sign a three- or four-year extension due to the over-38 rule, though if he waits until he reaches free agency in 2027 to finalize a new contract, he could sign for up to three seasons at that time.

As we noted on Sunday when we took a closer look at some of the top extension candidates around the NBA, Curry will remain extension-eligible until June 30, 2027, so while it’s possible he’ll work out an agreement with the Warriors within the coming days or weeks, it could make sense for him to wait until later in the season to complete a new deal.

After the trade deadline, for example, he may have a clearer sense of Golden State’s direction going forward and would be able to better assess whether he wants to accept a more team-friendly deal. The club currently only has about $28MM ($41MM counting player options) in guaranteed money on its books for 2027/28.

For their part, the Warriors are said to be willing to give Curry whatever kind of contract he wants up to his max. Co-owner Joe Lacob expressed confidence earlier this month that the two sides would get something done, stating, “I don’t want Steph to go anywhere. I really can’t imagine a scenario where he’s going anywhere.”

Curry battled a knee issue last season that limited him to 43 regular season appearances, but he continued to perform at an All-NBA level when he was available, averaging 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds in 30.9 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .468/.393/.923.

The 38-year-old was one of several players to miss time for the Warriors, who lost Jimmy Butler (ACL) and Moses Moody (patellar tendon) to season-ending injuries. While Butler and Moody are expected to remain sidelined for the start of the 2026/27 season, Curry is optimistic about what Golden State can do if the rest of its key players can stay on the court.

“Hopefully we can be healthy and just have a chance to show what we’re capable of, myself included, missing so many games last year,” he told Johnson.
