New Delhi: Several important meetings held during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kyrgyzstan have intensified the discussion regarding India's foreign policy. Let us tell you, in Bishkek, PM Modi has talked to Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Kyrgyzstan President Sadir Japarov. In these meetings, it has come to light that bilateral relations as well as regional cooperation and strategic issues will be discussed.
The importance of these meetings has increased at a time when Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey have signed a joint defense agreement in August. Under this agreement, if there is an armed attack on any one member, it will be considered an attack against all three. However, the countries concerned have not described it as an alliance against any particular country.
Focus on Chabahar with Iran
For India, Iran is not only an important country in West Asia, but is also an important partner in terms of connectivity. Through Chabahar port, India is trying to bypass Pakistan and access Afghanistan and Central Asia. Work is also being done to connect Chabahar with the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
Why is Armenia important?
Armenia is also becoming increasingly important in India's strategic thinking. Trilateral talks have already taken place between India, Iran and Armenia on connectivity. In this, emphasis has been laid on exploring possibilities of cooperation on issues like INSTC, Chabahar Port and Armenia's 'Crossroads of Peace' initiative.
Keep an eye on Central Asia also
Dialogue with Kyrgyzstan is part of India's Central Asia policy. Apart from trade, connectivity and security in this region, India also wants to strengthen its relations in the field of energy. In such a situation, instead of becoming a part of any new military group, India seems to be moving ahead on the policy of strengthening its strategic relations with different countries. Connectivity with Iran, cooperation with Armenia and increasing involvement in Central Asia can be seen as part of this comprehensive strategy.
