Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has tendered his resignation from the Pakistan men’s national selection committee following significant alterations to the Test squad and coaching staff announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) during the ongoing England tour, Cricinfo reported.
The PCB has yet to accept Misbah’s resignation. He has also decided to leave his position as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
The announcement came a day after Pakistan made extensive changes to their team following a 194-run defeat to England at Lord’s, which left them 2-0 down in the three-match Test series.
The PCB released seven players from the Test squad ahead of the third Test at Edgbaston, scheduled to begin on September 9. Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul were removed from their roles as head coach and bowling coach, respectively.
Players released from the squad include Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Agha, Ali Usman, Aamer Jamal, Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad. Pakistan has introduced five uncapped players alongside Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who have a combined experience of ten matches. The uncapped players added are Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran Randhawa, and Razaullah.
Additionally, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke have joined the Test coaching staff ahead of the third Test.
Misbah, who retired as Pakistan’s most successful Test captain in 2017, has held multiple positions within the PCB. He was appointed head coach and chief selector in 2019 but stepped down as chief selector in October 2020 to focus on coaching duties. He resigned as head coach in 2021.
In 2023, Misbah returned to the PCB as an advisor under the ad hoc management committee chief Zaka Ashraf. He was appointed as one of five mentors for the men’s Champions Cup in 2024 and worked with women’s domestic teams. Last month, he coached the Pakistan Gold side to victory in the 50-over National Champions Cup in Multan, led by captain Shaheen Afridi.
Misbah was appointed to the four-member national selection committee in March 2025 alongside Aaqib Javed, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Asad Shafiq. He was also working under a contract that required him to serve as a batting consultant for 180 days annually.
The defeat at Lord’s marked Pakistan’s 15th loss in their last 20 Tests. Pakistan currently sit at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings. The third Test starts at Edgbaston on September 9, where Pakistan will aim to conclude the series positively and avoid a 3-0 whitewash.
The Pakistan squad for the Edgbaston Test against England includes: Babar Azam (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Arafat Minhas, Azan Awais, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Ali, Muhammad Imran, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wicketkeeper), Razaullah, Saad Baig (wicketkeeper), Saim Ayub, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique, and Ubaid Shah.
