Manchester United finally got their Premier League campaign up and running with a commanding 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, handing Michael Carrick his first victory as the club’s permanent head coach. But despite the celebratory mood at Old Trafford, not everybody was fully satisfied, with one key player admitting he was ‘angry’ about his own performance.

Manchester United found their rhythm under Carrick as they registered their first Premier League win of the season in emphatic style, defeating Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford. The result was an important moment for Carrick, as it marked his first success since taking charge on a permanent basis. Although the score suggested a one-sided contest, the Red Devils had to dig deep after going behind early against Gary O’Neil’s energetic side.

Bruno Fernandes was the standout performer, scoring a sharp hat-trick to inspire the turnaround. The Portugal midfielder also had support from Bryan Mbeumo, who got on the scoresheet, while a Jacob Greaves own goal helped make sure all three points stayed in Manchester. In spite of scoring five times, United were tested far more than the final scoreline implied, with Ipswich troubling the home defence on several occasions across the 90 minutes.

Luke Shaw accepted responsibility for the defensive mistake that led to the opening goal.

The afternoon began in difficult fashion for the home side when Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead in the 29th minute. The move started when Abdul Fatawu beat Shaw too easily down the flank before sending in a cross that Davis finished with a volley. Shaw, who had already come under heavy criticism following his error in United’s opening-weekend loss to Hull City, was clearly unhappy with his part in the goal.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Shaw gave an honest verdict on his own display despite the team’s victory. "A really important win We knew how important it was to win today," the left-back said. "I am a bit disappointed and angry with myself for the first goal. Extremely happy with the team in the second half, it was really good.

"With the quality in our squad we should have belief all the time we can win games. It always helps when you have someone like Bruno in your team, he can score and create."

The win was an ideal response to last week’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Hull City. Shaw stressed that the players felt a strong responsibility to deliver in front of their supporters and make amends for what happened previously.

Continuing his analysis of the game, Shaw said: "Us as Manchester United should be expected to win here. After last week, we were extremely disappointed and knew we had to react today. Of course not the first goal but the way we bounced back after that. We kept the tempo high and kept going for more - that is the thing we can improve this season."

As the transfer deadline on Tuesday approaches, there is still speculation around United’s interest in signing a new left-back to provide competition for Shaw. Even so, Carrick preferred to highlight the positives surrounding his present squad and the work already completed in the transfer window.

Carrick told BBC Sport after the game: "I think we’ve done some fantastic business and we’ve done it very well with the money we’ve spent. We’re making the most of the situation that we have. The spirit is good and they want to fight for each other."
