How do companies increase the capacity of 5G tower? Know the whole game from Extra Spectrum to Small Cells

5G network is expanding rapidly in India and along with it, the consumption of mobile data is also increasing continuously. Traffic on mobile towers is increasing due to services like video streaming, online gaming, video calls and large file downloads. In such a situation, it is not enough to just launch 5G in new areas, but it also becomes necessary to increase the capacity of the existing network.

After all, why does the capacity of 5G tower have to be increased?

The capacity of any mobile tower to handle data is limited. When there are fewer users in an area, the existing network can easily handle the traffic. But as connections and data usage increases, the load on the tower also increases.

Its effect may be visible in the form of reduced internet speed, instability in the network or connectivity being affected during peak times. In such a situation, telecom companies upgrade the existing site.

Extra spectrum increases network capacity

A major way to increase the capacity of 5G networks is to use additional spectrum. Telecom operators have spectrum available in different frequency bands.

Different 5G bands can be used simultaneously as per need. The ability to handle more data traffic is achieved by making better use of available resources through techniques like spectrum aggregation.

New antenna and radio units are installed on the tower

It is not always necessary to build a new tower to increase network capacity. Many times new radio units, antennas and other network equipment are installed on the existing tower itself.

Apart from this, technology like Massive MIMO is used in modern 5G networks. In this, many antenna elements work together, due to which the network can be provided better to a large number of users from the same site.

Backhaul Network should be strong

Even after increasing the capacity of the tower, if its backhaul is weak then the full benefit of the network upgrade will not be available.

Backhaul is the connection that connects the mobile site to the telecom company's main network. In high-traffic areas, companies often use high-capacity fiber optic connections so that the heavy data traffic to and from the tower can be easily handled.

Small cells are installed in more crowded areas

If there is a lot of continuous traffic on a tower in an area, then Small Cells can be installed there. These small network stations provide additional capacity in a limited area.

Their use is especially beneficial in shopping malls, stadiums, airports, markets and densely populated areas. This reduces the pressure on the main tower and users can get a better network experience.

How much does 5G Tower Upgrade cost?

There is no fixed cost for increasing the capacity of a 5G network. The cost depends on the level of upgrade being done in the network.

If only software or minor network upgrades are required, the cost may be relatively low. At the same time, the cost of installing new radio units, Massive MIMO systems, antennas, power systems and high-capacity fiber can increase significantly.

In case of setting up a new mobile site, along with installation of tower, expenses like land or site rent, electricity, backhaul, permit and regular maintenance are also added.

The real game of 5G is not limited to just installing towers.

Behind the better speed and stability of 5G network, not only the tower, but many parts like spectrum, antenna, radio system, backhaul and small cells work together. As 5G users and data consumption increases in India, it will become more important for telecom companies to increase the capacity of existing networks.
