Bayern Munich made it two wins in two matches in the Frauen-Bundesliga on Monday, beating newly promoted Mainz 2-0 at the FC Bayern Campus.

The champions controlled the game for most of the afternoon, pinning Mainz back and hardly allowing the visitors any chance to settle. Bayern enjoyed 74% possession and ended the match with 25 shots to Mainz's five, underlining how one-sided the contest was.

Even so, the opening goal took time to arrive.

It eventually came in the 38th minute, when Giulia Gwinn found the net to hand Bayern the lead they had been pressing for and put them ahead at half-time.

After the break, Mainz had little option but to defend, while Bayern kept patiently trying to break through the visitors' shape. The second goal did not come quickly, and Mainz deserve credit for forcing Bayern to work hard for it.

There was also an encouraging moment for Bayern supporters in the 64th minute.

Lena Oberdorf came on from the bench for Bernadette Amani, marking an important step in her return from a second ACL injury. After spending so long away from competitive football, even a 30-minute appearance felt significant.

Gwinn's comeback was another positive. The Germany international returned to the starting XI after recovering from the shoulder injury that ended her previous campaign early, and she made her return count by scoring the opener.

Mainz continued to resist, but Bayern finally made the result certain in stoppage time.

Vanessa Gilles scored in the 91st minute to make it 2-0, securing Bayern's second clean sheet of the campaign and ensuring there would be no late drama.

The result preserves Bayern's perfect start after their 4-1 victory over Union Berlin on the opening weekend. With another title defence now under way, the early signs have been promising for the reigning champions.

For Mainz, it was a difficult introduction to the Frauen-Bundesliga. After winning promotion through back-to-back campaigns, they came up against a Bayern side that simply gave them very little room to breathe.

Bayern's next challenge is at home to SC Freiburg on September 6, while Mainz will be hoping to respond in their next league match.
