Indonesia and the US begin Super Garuda Shield military exercises with 4,700 troops. Many countries including Britain, France and Japan are involved in this. The exercise will focus on special forces training and cyber defense.

Washington: Indonesia and the US launched multinational military exercises on Monday aimed at strengthening defense capabilities and deterring potential aggression in the Asia-Pacific region. This time around 4,700 soldiers are taking part in the Super Garuda Shield exercise which has been being organized for almost two decades. Armies of several US allies, including Britain, France and Japan, will conduct exercises in different parts of Indonesia.

This military exercise has started at a time when Indonesia is increasing defense cooperation with America on one hand, while on the other hand it is also strengthening its relations with China. Indonesia’s foreign policy is generally defined as an ‘independent and active’ policy. Jakarta tries to maintain strategic and economic relations with both the United States and China.

4,700 soldiers will participate in the exercise

About 4,700 military personnel are participating in the Super Garuda Shield exercise this year. The exercises will be conducted in several areas of Indonesia, including the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. These military activities are planned to continue till September 11.

Apart from Britain, France and Japan, armies of many other countries are also involved in this exercise. Some countries, including East Timor, Italy and Thailand, have sent observers to the exercises. According to him, in times of peace, it is necessary to develop military contacts and mutual understanding between the allied countries. Through joint exercises, soldiers understand each other’s functioning and can establish better coordination in case of potential crisis.

Ellis described Indonesia as an important country for regional stability. Indonesia’s geographical location, among the world’s largest democratic countries, also makes it important in the Indo-Pacific strategy.

Indonesia’s defense cooperation with America strengthened

Defense relations between Indonesia and the United States have expanded significantly in recent times. In April, both countries had elevated their defense cooperation to the level of Major Defense Cooperation Partnership.
