Mohammed Shami: While waiting to return to the Indian team, Mohammed Shami set a great example in domestic cricket. On the first day of the semi-finals of the Duleep Trophy 2026, the Indian pacer touched a milestone which was achieved by only five Indian bowlers before him. Playing for East Zone against Central Zone, Shami completed 900 wickets in professional cricket.

Shami played under the leadership of Vaibhav

Ishan Kishan is the regular captain of East Zone in the semifinals of Duleep Trophy. But on the first day of the match he had to leave the field due to injury. In his absence, only 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi took over the leadership of the party. Vaibhav was selected as the vice-captain of the East Zone.

Experienced Shami is seen playing under the leadership of the young captain. East Zone won the toss and decided to bowl first. By proving that decision right, they bowled out Central Zone for 266 runs in the first innings.

A couple of wickets for Shami

Rinku Singh played an important role in the innings of the central zone. He played a fighting innings of 60 runs and brought the team’s score to 266. Aryan Jual scored 46 runs. Vaibhav played an important role in getting him out.

The umpire first gave Jual not out. But the skipper decided to take a comprehensive review. That decision proved correct and Jual had to return to the pavilion. Mukesh Kumar and Abhijit Sarkar took three wickets each for East Zone. Shami and Kunain Qureshi took two wickets each.

Shami in the 900-wicket club

Shami took his first wicket by dismissing Yash Rathore in the central zone in the first innings. Then he returned Arshad Khan for just one run. And with this second wicket, he completed 900 wickets in professional cricket.

Shami became the sixth Indian bowler to take 900 or more wickets in First Class, List A and T20 cricket combined. This is undoubtedly another feather in the crown of his long and successful career in Indian cricket.

Shami’s statistics in three formats

Shami has so far taken 379 wickets in First Class cricket, 283 in List A cricket and 280 in T20 cricket. His wicket tally is now 900 across three forms of cricket.

Shami has played 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20 Internationals for India. His wicket figures in the three formats are 229, 206 and 27 respectively.

Waiting to return to the national team

Shami will turn 36 on September 3. Despite his age, he is still proving his skill with the ball. A milestone like the Duleep Trophy on the domestic stage is expected to boost his confidence further.

Although the door of the national team is closed for him for now, Shami continues to try to stay in the selectors’ attention with his performance in domestic cricket. The precedent of 900 wickets is another big achievement of his in that match.
