Zomato's new step

Online food delivery service Zomato has decided to take strict action against analog dairy based dishes on its platform. The company has clarified that it will adopt zero tolerance policy in this matter. If a restaurant does not follow the prescribed standards, its Zomato listing will be removed.

Which dishes were removed?

According to Zomato, those restaurants whose menus mentioned that analog dairy was used in some of their dishes have been removed from the platform.

The company says that this decision has been taken to provide correct information about food items to customers and maintain transparency.

New instructions for restaurants

Zomato has instructed its restaurant partners to use genuine dairy products in preparing dishes. If this is not possible for a restaurant, it will have to remove dishes containing analog dairy from its menu.

Additionally, restaurants have been asked to thoroughly check the packaging, labels and ingredient information of products they receive from their suppliers. It will be mandatory to give correct information about the ingredients used in the dish on the platform also.

What is analog dairy?

Analog dairy products are products that use other alternatives in place of real milk or dairy ingredients. Their taste, texture and appearance can sometimes be similar to real dairy products.

For example, vegetable oil, starch, or other ingredients may be used in place of milk fat in analog cheese.

The use of such products is not illegal in itself, but problems arise when they are sold to consumers without providing correct information as to whether they are real cheese or dairy products.

Growing discussion on analog cheese

In recent times, the debate regarding analog cheese and dairy products has intensified in the country. In April 2026, FSSAI had issued a public notice on this issue.

It was stated in the notice that selling analog or cheese analog in the name of Paneer can be considered a violation of the rules. FSSAI had told food business operators and restaurants that if non-dairy ingredients are being used in place of dairy ingredients in a product, then this information should be clearly mentioned in the menu.

Zomato's former controversy

Zomato's name has already come up in the news regarding analog paneer. In October last year, it was claimed on social media that analog cheese was being supplied through Zomato's Hyperpure service, which provides ingredients to restaurants.

The company was also criticized after this claim. Now Zomato has taken a strict stand against analog dairy dishes on its platform and has instructed restaurant partners to provide correct information about the ingredients and follow the rules.
