Rajendra Dawadi Saved Nepal Students: The horror of the flood that hit Nepal on August 26 is still in people's minds, in which so many lives were destroyed and so many homes were destroyed. But, amid all this, due to the promptness of a principal, the lives of 1,643 children were saved from that disaster.

Rajendra Dawadi was at school when he received a warning that a major flood was heading towards the area. He ordered the immediate evacuation of schools and helped save 1,643 children from deadly floods in Nepal's Nuwakot district.

Who is Rajendra Dawadi?

Rajendra Dawadi, 47, is the principal and English teacher at Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Trishuli Valley. He runs a three-storey school. Around 9:20 am on Wednesday, a friend called him and warned him that a nearby village had been washed away in the river. He asked to run away from the hospital. Dawadi initially thought the school was safe. The three-storey concrete building was about 60 meters above the river. But soon, a parent reached the school and said that the water was rising rapidly.

How Rajendra wisely saved the lives of children

Rajendra Dawadi immediately rang the school bell and asked the teachers to take the children out of their classes. He also called the school bus drivers and asked them to go back. By then, a bus, which he had not been able to contact, had already crossed the bridge.

The children started moving towards higher ground. A girl had a panic attack and went uphill on a motorbike. The other children ran away on foot, while Dawadi ran behind them. The children finally took shelter under a Bodhi tree.

Two staff members died in the flood

Soon after, flood water spread across the entire area. Mud, stones, snow and debris destroyed buildings, bridges and other structures including schools. But all 1,643 children survived. Most of the school staff also survived. However, two staff members were killed. Santos Pariyar, 32, a social history teacher, was swept away after returning to his rented room near the river to prepare breakfast. The school watchman, Sultan Lama, was also killed after returning to close the school doors.

How did the flood happen?

There was a sudden flood after a huge amount of ice and stones broke from the Langtang Lirung peak near the Nepal-Tibet border. The pile fell about 1,200 meters in the upper reaches of the Lahende Khola river. Floods killed hundreds of people in Nepal and Tibet and thousands went missing. So far, 768 people have been reported dead in Nepal, while more than 2,500 people are missing. China said that 16 people have died and 546 people are missing in Tibet.

The flood has also affected many hydropower projects. It is believed that more than 100 workers are trapped inside the tunnel. Rescue teams are working to reach them. Nepali Army has sent air through a pipe into a tunnel of Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project. India has also sent a rescue team of 11 people to help Nepal. China has sent a tunnel rescue team of nine people.
