Manchester United are getting ready to welcome Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon, and their starting XI could look very different from the side that took the field at Hull last weekend.

The Red Devils opened their campaign with a stunning 0-2 loss to the Tigers. As a result, they can hardly afford another slip-up against a newly promoted Premier League side, particularly in their first home match of the season.

To secure an improved outcome, Michael Carrick is expected to make a few changes to his lineup, removing some of the players who turned in disappointing displays at Hull.

Last weekend, Senne Lammens was among the few Manchester United players who escaped heavy criticism for his performance. Even though he let in two goals, he still produced some strong saves to prevent his team from suffering further humiliation. The Belgian goalkeeper’s place in the side has not really been in question since arriving a year ago.

By contrast, the defence is almost certain to need a reshuffle. Despite his costly error on Hull’s opening goal, Harry Maguire should retain his place in the team, unlike young teammate Ayden Heaven, who could lose his spot to the more experienced Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine centre-back was among the last players to report back to Carrington this summer, with his national side having gone all the way at the World Cup. So, while the 28-year-old may not yet be at peak physical condition, he should still be fit enough to start.

Noussair Mazraoui was another player who failed to make a positive impression against the Tigers, and he is likely to give way to Diogo Dalot at right-back. On the other side, Luke Shaw remains Carrick’s clear first-choice left-back, with United still yet to bring in a new option for that position.

In midfield, both Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos endured forgettable debuts. However, with Carlos Baleba still sidelined through injury, the Brazilian remains Manchester United’s only available holding midfielder, and that should be enough to hand him another opportunity.

As for Tielemans, he may be left out in favour of Kobbie Mainoo, who looked like an improvement on the Belgian after coming on in the second half last week. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set to continue in his usual attacking midfield role.

After failing to make an impact on the left wing, Patrick Dorgu was taken off at half-time at Hull, so he is unlikely to keep his place in the starting lineup. Carrick could instead hand Marcus Rashford a start, while Matheus Cunha is expected to lead the attack once again, with Benjamin Sesko still not fully fit.

Bryan Mbeumo should continue on the right flank, with Amad Diallo still unavailable due to injury, something Carrick confirmed on Friday.
