New Delhi. OpenAI has announced the expansion of ads within ChatGPT in India. With this move by the company, logged in adult users on Free and Go plans in India may see sponsored ads below the replies to (ChatGPT). India is one of the key markets for OpenAI and the company is exploring new ways to monetize its popular AI chatbot. According to the company, advertisements will be kept separate from ChatGPT’s responses and will be clearly labeled as ‘Sponsored’. However, ads will not be shown with answers to sensitive and regulated topics.

Free and Go users will see advertisements

ChatGPT Ads launched in India for free and (Go) will be collected from adult users logging in to the tier. ChatGPT Go is priced at Rs 399 per month in India. Advertisements will appear below ChatGPT’s responses. OpenAI says users will be clearly told which content is advertising and which is a response to ChatGPT.

Ads will not be shown with sensitive topics

OpenAI has also set some limits regarding advertisements. According to the company, ads will not be shown with answers to sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health and politics. The company says that ads will be designed in such a way that they do not interfere with ChatGPT’s answers and the distinction between answers and sponsored content remains clear for users.

Advertisements of more than 50 brands will be live

According to OpenAI, ads from more than 50 brands are expected to go live in India this week. Apart from this, the company is preparing to launch the self-service facility of ChatGPT Ads Manager in India from September 4. Through this, brands will be able to run their own advertising campaigns. The initial budget for the advertising campaign has been kept at Rs 725 per day.

India becomes the biggest user base of OpenAI

The number of users of ChatGPT is increasing rapidly globally. India was reported to be the second largest market for OpenAI by February 2026. It was reported that there were more than 10 crore weekly users in the country, including students, developers, teachers and businessmen. Earlier this month, the number of global weekly users of ChatGPT had crossed the 1 billion mark.

ChatGPT Ads reached many countries after America

OpenAI first announced plans to test ads within ChatGPT in January 2026. Its purpose was to diversify the company’s sources of income and accelerate ChatGPT’s expansion. An advertising pilot program started in the US in February. After this it was expanded to countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.

Advertisement also started in 31 countries of Europe

OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT Ads in 31 countries in Europe. These also include major markets like Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Now with the expansion in India, OpenAI is moving towards expanding its advertising business further. The company expects that ChatGPT Ads can significantly increase its revenue in a market with a large user base like India.
