Leeds United could yet complete a move for Mykhailo Mudryk before the transfer deadline, but any possible departure for Willy Gnonto, now one of the club’s longest-serving players, would leave supporters deeply disappointed.

Leeds had an opening loan offer turned down because the terms were not suitable for Chelsea, although discussions remained ongoing and there was still belief a deal could be done. The Blues then put matters on hold, feeling Mudryk might struggle for regular minutes in Daniel Farke’s present system, despite the player being eager to make the move. BBC Sport has reported that a Fiorentina move for Gnonto would create a pathway for Mudryk, with Chelsea believing his chances of game time would improve if Gnonto were to leave.

With the deadline approaching fast, the opportunity has opened up once more. Chelsea are aiming to send Mudryk out on loan, and the Ukraine winger still favours joining a Premier League club.

Farke’s 3-5-2 formation would see Mudryk competing with Noah Okafor for the position playing just behind the striker. However, the system is flexible, so there is still a case for his signing to work.

Mudryk would represent a gamble, having not featured in competitive action since November 2024, and he would require time and patience to get back to his best. Even so, his overall potential is considered higher than Gnonto’s.

Adam Underwood must now make a key decision: whether to take a chance on Mudryk and possibly profit from Gnonto, who remains a dependable option from the bench, or continue backing the Italian. Gnonto impressed in pre-season against Manchester United, but he then suffered an injury and has not played since, although he is expected to return for Brentford. Supporters are very fond of him, and many believe he deserves more minutes, especially given his increasing versatility.
