Activities to the 8th Pay Commission for central employees and pensioners have gained momentum. The Commission team is continuously holding meetings across the country so that the suggestions of employee unions and various organizations can be recorded. However, what will be the actual increase in salary and what will be the formula is yet to be finalized.
New schedule of meetings decided across the country
The Commission is visiting different states to know the opinion of the employees. As per the schedule, the meeting has been organized in Jaipur on 31st August and 1st September. After this, discussions will be held in Chennai on 7th and 8th September and Puducherry on 9th September. A meeting has been organized in Chandigarh from 16 to 18 September for the employees of North India. In the next phase of South India, the Commission will reach Bengaluru on 7th and 8th October, for which suggestions can be sent till 18th September. Earlier, discussions have also been completed in Delhi, Ladakh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Odisha.
Demand of employees regarding fitment factor
Under the Pay Commission, the biggest focus of the employees is on the Fitment Factor. If we look at the historical context, it was fixed at 1.86 in the Sixth Pay Commission and 2.57 in the Seventh Pay Commission. This time, major employee organizations like National Council (JCM) and BPMS are strongly demanding a fitment factor of more than 3.5 times. If this demand is accepted, there will be a big jump in the basic salary. However, the Commission has not yet taken any final decision on the new pay matrix and minimum wage figures.
Report deadlines and administrative steps
This commission, constituted on November 3, 2025, has been given 18 months to submit its final recommendations. If we look at this fixed deadline, the report may come out around May or June 2027. The Commission has also made necessary amendments in the guidelines to consultant recruitment for technical and professional help on August 11, 2026.
The Commission will prepare a draft based on the inputs of all its regional meetings, after which the ball will be in the court of the Central Government and the final policy on allowances and pension will be decided.
