German CEO earns $108,000 a month running Vietnamese bank

Techcombank chief executive Jens Lottner earned nearly VND17 billion (US$650,000) in the first half this year, a 29% increase from the same period last year.

The bank’s reviewed half-year financial statements show it paid a combined VND32.9 billion in remuneration to its board of directors and supervisory board and in salary and bonuses to its chief executive, up more than 6% from the same period last year. Lottner accounted for VND16.9 billion of that.

Lottner was born in Germany and holds a doctorate in economics from Dresden University of Technology.

He has more than three decades of experience in financial services, including runs at McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group and Siam Commercial Bank in Thailand.

He took over as Techcombank’s chief executive in August 2020.

Techcombank staff averaged VND46 million a month in total compensation over the first six months, up 4.5% from a year earlier.

The bank spent VND3.576 trillion on staff in the first half.

Pre-tax profit for the half came to VND18.5 trillion, a 22.5% increase, more than half against the full-year target.

Total assets stood at more than VND1.27 quadrillion ($48.7 billion) as of June 30. Customer loans reached VND847.3 trillion ($32.5 billion), up 10.4%, with a bad debt ratio of 1.08%.

Customer deposits rose 7% from the end of last year to VND662.4 trillion.
