The Supreme Court will hear a petition to ethanol labeling on petrol pumps on August 31. The petition seeks direction to the central government and other stakeholders to ensure accurate labeling of ethanol content in petrol at petrol pumps. According to the Supreme Court’s August 31 case list, this petition was heard by Justice M.M. Sundaresh and Prasanna B. will be done before Varale’s bench. The petition filed by Narendra Kumar Goswami also demanded that every fuel bill should clearly and legibly indicate the percentage of ethanol in petrol sold.
According to the petition, the respondents (Centre and others) should be directed to create and publish an official and public database containing information on the suitability of various blends of ethanol for vehicles, within a stipulated time. This database should contain vehicle-specific information and be searchable by brand, model, engine type and year of manufacture.
The petition also requested the formation of an independent expert committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Bureau of Indian Standards and others (such as independent automobile engineers) to investigate the actual use of E20 (petrol with 20 percent ethanol) in existing vehicles and submit a public report.
