With the changing seasons, the needs of our skin also change completely, due to which problems like dryness, acne and tanning start occurring. Adopt an effective, practical, and simple skincare routine for every season from a skincare expert.

Meera was standing in front of the mirror getting ready for her fifth wedding anniversary. As she started applying foundation on her face, her eyebrows raised. The skin near the cheeks was becoming so dry and flaky that makeup looked patchy instead of blending properly. The surprising thing was that just two months ago, in the scorching summers, her face used to be so oily that she had to use tissue paper every half hour. The impact of changing weather had disturbed the complete balance of his skin. This dilemma of Meera is not of any one woman. Most of us keep using the same products and the same skincare routine throughout the year. We forget that just as the clothes in our wardrobe and the food in our kitchen change with the changing seasons, our skin also needs different care according to the weather patterns.

skin changes

Our body and our skin are directly connected to the cycles of nature. When the humidity in the air increases, the pores of the skin start releasing oil, and when the cold winds of winter blow, the natural moisture of the skin gets blown away in the wind. Without understanding these changes, using even the most expensive cosmetic proves ineffective. Getting glowing and healthy skin every season does not mean that you buy new products worth thousands of rupees every month. This simply means that you slightly modify the basic needs of your skin – cleansing, hydration and protection – according to the season. To give correct and scientific guidance to women on this subject, well-known skincare and cosmetology expert Dr. Radhika Sen of ‘Derma-Wellness Clinic’ has joined us. According to Dr. Radhika, if we include some very small but effective habits in our daily routine, then no matter what the weather is, the inner glow of the skin will always remain intact.

1. Oil Control and Gel-Based Hydration

Dr. Radhika Sen tells that the sebum (oil) glands of the skin become very active during strong sunlight and humid days. Due to this, stickiness, blackheads and acne start increasing on the face.

Suggestion: In summers, avoid cream-based moisturizers and opt for ‘gel-based’ or ‘water-based’ moisturizers. These deeply hydrate the skin without making it sticky. Additionally, wash your face with salicylic acid or a foaming cleanser twice a day to prevent sweat and dirt from accumulating in the pores.

2. The only bodyguard for every season

Friends, if you think that sunscreen is something to be applied only in summer or while going out of the house, then you are playing the biggest mess with your skin. The sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays can damage your skin, causing premature wrinkles and blemishes.

Expert Choice: Whether the weather is sunny, rainy or bitterly cold, it is mandatory to apply sunscreen every morning. Always choose a sunscreen with at least 30 or 50 SPF (broad spectrum). Even if you are inside the house or sitting in front of a laptop, there must be a layer of it on your face.

3. Approaching winter

The cold and dry winds of winter damage the upper protective layer of the skin. The skin needs extra nutrition in this season.

Modern Routine: Change your face wash in winter and switch to a gentle, non-foaming or ‘milk-based’ cleanser. Immediately after washing your face, when the skin is still slightly wet, apply a hyaluronic acid serum or a thick cream containing ceramides. It locks the moisture inside the skin and prevents itching caused by dryness.

4. Protection of skin barrier

Nowadays, after seeing on social media, women have started using different types of active acids (like retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide) together. According to Dr. Radhika, these experiments done without thinking completely destroy the natural barrier of your skin in every season.

Safe solution: Always keep your skincare simple. Use only one or two active serums at a time. If the skin becomes very sensitive or red during any season, then immediately stop all chemical products and apply only natural and safe things like plain aloe vera gel, ceramides and coconut oil.

5. Monsoon humidity

As soon as the rainy season arrives, the humidity in the air reaches its highest level. In this season, a strange dryness and stickiness is felt simultaneously on the face, due to which the risk of fungal acne increases greatly.

Right way: Completely avoid wearing heavy makeup during monsoon, because makeup blocks the pores due to humidity. Exfoliate the skin once a week with a mild ‘glycolic acid’ or natural charcoal scrub. Do not touch the face with hands again and again, because in this season, bacteria from hands get transferred to the face very quickly.

6. ‘Inside-out’ hydration

No matter how expensive cream we apply on the face externally, unless the body is clean and hydrated from within, no glow can appear on the skin. When the weather changes, our water drinking pattern also changes, especially in winter we reduce water drinking.

Daily Habit: Drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water a day in every season. In summer you can take lemon water or coconut water, while in winter you can drink herbal tea or lukewarm water. Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables (like watermelon, cucumber in summer and carrot, amla in winter). The antioxidants present in these recharge the skin cells from within.

7. Night Skincare Routine

Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun and give it a natural glow.

Throughout the day our skin fights dust, pollution and sunlight, but night time is when our skin repairs itself. Therefore, skincare before sleeping at night matters most.

Night Rule: Never forget to clean your face before sleeping at night. The absorption capacity of the skin increases at night, so at this time apply a good night cream or face oil (like Argan or Jojoba oil) and massage gently for 2 minutes. It will repair your skin overnight and you will feel refreshed in the morning. Flaunt your natural beauty fearlessly in every season.

FAQ

Is it necessary to change skincare products every season?

Yes, because in summers the skin releases more oil which requires gel-based products, while in winters ceramides and thick creams are needed to protect against dry winds.

Should you apply sunscreen even when indoors?

Of course, UV rays coming from indoor windows and blue light emanating from laptop-mobile screens harm the skin, so it is mandatory to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily.

How to avoid fungal acne in monsoon?

Avoid heavy makeup in monsoon, do not touch your face frequently and exfoliate with mild glycolic acid or charcoal scrub once a week.

How to repair damaged skin barrier?

Stop using all active serums (retinol, AHA/BHA) immediately and use only aloe vera gel, ceramides and non-foaming gentle cleansers.

What is the correct way to apply Hyaluronic Acid in winter?

Hyaluronic acid should always be applied to slightly damp skin and immediately followed by a moisturizer to lock in the moisture, otherwise it can further dry out the skin.
