England’s Test captain Joe Root made a big world record in his name on Friday 28 August. During the second Test being played against Pakistan at Lord’s, Root became the highest run-scorer in domestic Test matches. He needed 13 runs to break the record of former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. Root could score only 4 runs in the first innings, but in the second innings he left Ponting’s record behind by scoring 24 runs in 37 balls.
Root has now scored 7,591 runs in 89 test matches played in England. Earlier, the record for scoring the most runs in a domestic Test was in the name of Ricky Ponting, who had scored 7,578 runs in 92 Test matches in Australia. Now after Root and Ponting, the names of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahela Jayawardene and Jacques Kallis come in this list. Root is already the second highest run-scorer in the world in Test cricket and this new record is another big achievement in his illustrious career.
Joe Root missed making another record
However, Root missed out on making another world record in the same innings. Pakistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Ali got him out LBW in the second innings. If Root had scored a half-century in this innings, he would have left Sachin Tendulkar behind in terms of scoring the most half-centuries in Test cricket. At present both the batsmen are tied with 68-68 half-centuries. Root scored his 68th half-century in the first Test against Pakistan played in Leeds on 20 August.
72 runs away from 12 thousand domestic international runs
Root will have a chance to achieve another big achievement in the third test against Pakistan. At home, he has so far scored 11,928 runs in 260 innings of 199 international matches. He needs only 72 runs to complete 12 thousand runs. If he achieves this figure in the third Test, he will become the first English player and only the sixth batsman in the world to score 12 thousand international runs on home ground. The record for scoring the most international runs on home ground is currently in the name of Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 14,192 runs in India.
