Pakistan has been repeatedly pleading for restoration of the Indus Water Treaty. India has maintained its strict stance regarding the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan is crying tears of blood due to India’s tough attitude. Now Pakistan has reached the international forum regarding this issue. Expressing concern over India’s April 2025 decision, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has requested to provide Indus water.

Expressed concern over postponement of Indus Water Treaty

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in America that the Indus River system is the lifeline for Pakistan. The lives of more than 25 crore population of Pakistan are linked to it. He appealed to India to restore the Indus Water Treaty and also demanded the international community to intervene in this matter. Ishaq Dar gave this statement in a virtual seminar organized by the Pakistani Embassy in America.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, while addressing a seminar in Washington, outlined a three-point approach including fully implementing the 1960 treaty and using the methods set out in the treaty to resolve disputes between these neighboring countries possessing nuclear weapons. Addressing the seminar virtually, Dar said, ‘Pakistan and India should restart and strengthen the process of technical dialogue, transparency and data sharing as per the treaty.’

Cited water crisis

The Foreign Minister of Pakistan also mentioned the increasing water crisis of his country. He said that Pakistan is already one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. There has been a huge decline in per capita water availability in the country in the last several decades. He also described climate change as a big challenge. Dar said that changing rainfall patterns, melting glaciers, devastating floods, prolonged drought and increasing uncertainty in water flows have added to Pakistan’s problems. He said that in view of these circumstances, there should be more cooperation between India and Pakistan on water issues.

Along with the appeal, also a warning to India

Ishaq Dar sought support from the international community and also warned India. He said that if Pakistan is deprived of the water it gets under the Indus Water Treaty, it could affect the peace and security of the region. He said that Indus River should not become a cause of conflict. It is the basis of life and livelihood for the people of the area. Dar appealed not to use shared water resources as a weapon.

Treaty postponed after Pahalgam attack

Let us tell you that India had postponed this World Bank brokered treaty in April 2025 after the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025. In this, Pakistani terrorists had killed 26 Hindu tourists by asking their religion. India has made it clear that ‘blood and water cannot flow together.’
