Suryakumar Yadav, who captained the Indian cricket team to a historic T20 World Cup 2026 title, has broken his silence on being stripped of the captaincy and dropped from the team soon after the tournament. Under the leadership of Surya, who took over the T20 team in July 2024, India not only went unbeaten, but also won the 2025 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup on 8 March 2026. Despite such a brilliant performance, the selectors dropped Suryakumar from the team citing poor form and appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new T20 captain.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Big Disclosure: Suryakumar Yadav expressed his heartache during a conversation on former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra’s YouTube channel. Surya said, “I sat at home for about a month and a half wondering how this could finally happen. I was hoping to captain the Indian team till the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup.”

Surya further said that three days before the team selection, BCCI’s selection committee spoke to him on the phone and made it clear that his name will not be selected for the England series, as now is the time to build a new team of the future.
He added, “When my name was not in the team, I laughed. Whenever there was a pressure situation during the match, I always tried to keep myself calm. I didn’t even think that something like this would happen. I didn’t react, because it was not my fault.” Despite such a difficult decision, Surya told the selectors, “The decision taken will definitely be for the good of the team. You took the decision and told me, I have no problem with it. I will continue to play and whenever you feel the time is right, call me back to the team.”
