The danger of sudden bursting of the lake formed due to breaking of the glacier on the China-Nepal border has been averted for the time being. According to Chinese officials, the water of the lake is gradually flowing out naturally, due to which the size of the lake is continuously decreasing.

Relief news from satellite images

This lake is formed in the same area where there was a catastrophic flood after the glacier broke on Wednesday. A large number of people have died in this disaster and thousands of people are still missing.

China’s Ministry of Water Resources said that satellite images received from Thursday to Saturday morning showed a continuous decrease in the water level of the lake. This lake is formed near the confluence of two rivers on the border of Tibet region of China and Nepal.

By Saturday afternoon, land was also visible in some parts of the lake. According to the ministry, on Saturday morning the surface area of ​​the lake had reduced to about 99,000 square meters, which is equivalent to about 14 football fields.

This has decreased by about 21,000 square meters as compared to Thursday. Officials say that due to natural release of water, the risk of sudden bursting of the lake has reduced considerably, although monitoring is still going on.

People were scared of the fear of another disaster

The water gushed down along with rocks, ice, mud and debris after a large part of the glacier broke off on Wednesday, causing massive destruction in the Himalayan river system and also washing away a border port complex linking China and Nepal.

After this, due to the increase in water in this lake formed from the debris of the glacier, there was a fear of it bursting and causing another major disaster. If this had happened, the relief and rescue operation going on below would also have been badly affected.

Experts believe that if the water level of the lake decreases completely in the next two to three days, then the rescue operation in the downstream areas can be continued safely.

24 hour surveillance with radar and drones

Officials said that any unusual situation will be immediately informed to the rescue teams and arrangements have also been made to give warning 30 minutes in advance. China’s government company China Eneng has started monitoring the lake from Thursday.

Radar and drones have been deployed in the area, which are being monitored 24 hours. On Friday, the rescue operation had to be stopped for some time due to the initial flow of water.

Officials have also identified another big lake below the glacier break point, which has an area of ​​more than 1.20 lakh square metres. This is also being closely monitored. Meanwhile, the death toll in China has increased to 7 and 554 people are still missing.
