Rekha Gupta Government is working on many big projects to improve the traffic system in Delhi and reduce the vehicular pressure on major routes. In this series, there is a plan to build about 61 km long elevated corridor along Najafgarh Drain. For this, Delhi government is preparing to appoint a private consultant. The proposed elevated corridor can play an important role in connecting Wazirabad to different parts of North Delhi. After completion of the project, it is expected to help in reducing the traffic pressure on major roads and provide alternative routes to the people.

In February this year, the Delhi government had announced a plan to build an elevated corridor along the Najafgarh drain. Now another step has been taken towards getting this project off the ground. The Public Works Department (PWD) is preparing to appoint a private consultant soon. Feasibility study of the proposed corridor will be conducted with the help of a consultant. In this, the technical feasibility of the project, possible route and various aspects to construction will be studied. Based on the study a detailed project plan will be prepared. After the completion of the feasibility study, it will be clear how the 61 km long elevated corridor can be developed. After this, further decisions will be taken on the cost, design and other aspects to construction of the project.

Traffic pressure increases due to slow speed and cross movement during peak hours.

According to a PWD official, the traffic pressure on the route around Najafgarh drain remains very high due to slow speed of vehicles and cross movement during both peak and non-peak times. This is why it has been decided to conduct a detailed study of its feasibility before starting the project. The official said that PWD is planning to appoint a consultant for this work. The further design and construction plan of the project will be finalized after the feasibility study is conducted by the consultant.

Road will be built on both sides of the drain

According to the proposed plan, a 27.415 km long road will be developed on both banks of Najafgarh drain from Chhawla to Basai Darapur. Including the roads on both sides, its total length will be 54.83 kilometers. Apart from this, there is a proposal to build a 5.94 km long two-lane road on the left bank of the drain from Jhatikara Bridge to Chhawla Bridge. The development of these roads aims to provide better connectivity around the drain and reduce traffic pressure on the existing road network.

The aim is to reduce traffic pressure, fuel consumption and pollution.

According to PWD officials, the biggest objective of the proposed corridor is to reduce the traffic pressure on the roads, travel time of people, fuel consumption and vehicular emissions. There is a plan to connect many major roads of Delhi through this corridor with an estimated cost of Rs 454 crore. The proposed route is planned to connect with Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II, Najafgarh Road and other major roads. Connectivity towards NH-9 and Rohtak Road is also expected to improve through UER-II.

61 KM long road with walking and cycling track

There is a plan to develop a 61 km long and 7 meter wide paved road along the banks of Najafgarh drain. Along with this, separate tracks will be made for pedestrians, runners and cyclists. Greenery will be developed by planting trees and plants on the roadside. With this, efforts will be made to develop the corridor not just as an alternative route for traffic, but as a better and convenient public area for the people.

New bridge will be built near metro depot

There is also a proposal to build a new bridge near the metro depot to improve movement. This can help in improving connectivity between the areas connected by the corridor. The project plan also has a provision for landscaping and large-scale plantation around the road corridor. New boundaries will be created wherever needed. At the same time, the existing broken walls will be repaired and put in order.
