Manchester United midfield talent Jayce Fitzgerald is reportedly close to sealing a loan move to Rotherham United.

The adaptable Fitzgerald has been with United since he was a child and has continued to develop well through the academy system.

Although midfield is regarded as his strongest position, he can operate in multiple roles and has also been used very effectively in central defence. Fitzgerald’s playing style and development path have previously led to comparisons with Barcelona and Spain great Sergio Busquets.

Busquets himself began as a defender during his early years, but he would later come to define the number six position and establish himself as one of the finest players ever to play that role.

Fitzgerald is now at a stage where he appears to have moved beyond youth football to some extent, but is not yet fully ready to step into regular first-team football at United.

A loan switch looks like the natural next stage in his progress and, according to Nathan Salt of the Daily Mail and journalist Micky Hugworth, the youngster is heading to Rotherham United.

Hugworth initially wrote, “Rotherham United are set to sign Manchester United youngster Jayce Fitzgerald on loan.”

Salt added, “Manchester United are sending academy midfielder Jayce Fitzgerald to Rotherham United on loan.”

“The 19-year-old has never previously been out on loan but is keen to test himself in a senior set-up.”

“Rotherham developed Dan Gore last season.”

Fitzgerald made 16 Premier League 2 appearances last season, scoring two goals and providing one assist during that run.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they welcome Ipswich Town to Old Trafford.
