The Tricky Trees kept up their intensity and got their reward midway through the first half when Dan Ndoye found the net.
The Switzerland international latched on to a through ball from Morgan Gibbs-White and calmly curled his finish into the bottom corner.
That goal brought an end to Ndoye's lengthy wait for a Premier League strike, with his previous goal in the competition having come on his debut against Brentford last season.
Forest went into half-time 1-0 in front, although Liverpool did have a goal disallowed for offside during the opening period.
