New Delhi. National President of Congress and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge has written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the situation arising out of the devastating floods in Nepal. In a letter to the Prime Minister, he has urged to take immediate steps for the safe return of Indian citizens and people of Indian origin and to provide humanitarian and relief assistance to the affected Nepali people. At the same time, in a separate letter written to the Home Minister, he has demanded to coordinate with the Government of Nepal and send National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams as per the need and cooperate in rescue, evacuation and relief operations.

In a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Kharge expressed serious concern over the devastation caused by floods in Nepal. He said that according to media reports, more than 500 people have lost their lives due to the floods and around 1,000 people are still missing. He said that due to this disaster thousands of people are deprived of basic facilities like food, medicines and shelter.

Mallikarjun Kharge appealed to the Prime Minister to coordinate with the Government of Nepal to ensure adequate humanitarian and relief assistance is provided to the affected people. The people of Nepal should get all possible assistance in this difficult time.

He also expressed concern about the Indian citizens and people of Indian origin stranded in Nepal. The letter said that due to floods, Indian citizens and people of Indian origin are stranded in different parts of Nepal. Kharge issued necessary instructions to the concerned officials and urged them to intensify efforts for rescue and safe evacuation.

Mallikarjun Kharge said that all necessary arrangements should be made for the safe and early return of stranded Indian citizens and people of Indian origin to India. Citing the information provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, he said that 320 Indian citizens in Nepal are unable to be contacted.

At the same time, in a separate letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge mentioned that due to floods in Nepal, people were affected on a large scale, houses and infrastructure were damaged and people were displaced. He said that there are deep and lasting relations between the people of India and Nepal. In such a situation, India should stand strongly with the people of Nepal in this hour of crisis.

Mallikarjun Kharge urged the Home Minister to consider providing immediate and comprehensive humanitarian and disaster relief assistance to Nepal. He specifically said that NDRF teams should be sent wherever needed in coordination with the Nepalese government.

He said that NDRF has the expertise and experience to deal with natural disasters and conduct relief and rescue operations. In such a situation, its teams can provide important assistance in rescue, evacuation of people and relief operations in Nepal.

Mallikarjun Kharge told the Home Minister that in view of the situation arising in Nepal, the Government of India should take action commensurate with the seriousness and urgency of this humanitarian crisis. Immediate steps will be taken from India to provide necessary assistance to the affected people.
