New Delhi, August 29 (IANS). Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that ONGC's first commercial hydrocarbon discovery in the Ashoknagar area of West Bengal has now reached an important stage towards production and commercial exploitation. He described it as a major achievement in strengthening India's energy security and increasing domestic oil and gas production.

In a post shared on social media platform

“As part of the unprecedented journey under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards strengthening India's energy security and increasing domestic hydrocarbon production, ONGC's first commercial hydrocarbon discovery at Ashoknagar in the Bengal Basin is now nearing a crucial phase of commercialisation,” he said.

Puri said that the first consignment of crude oil extracted from Ashoknagar area was sent to Haldia Refinery of Indian Oil Corporation. On this occasion, Ashoknagar MLA Dr. Sumay Hira and ONGC's Exploration Director were also present.

According to the Union Minister, this achievement marks a significant shift towards converting the long-running exploration work and sustained efforts into actual production capacity. With this, the name of West Bengal will be registered more strongly on the hydrocarbon map of India.

He said that this discovery of Ashoknagar is not only important for the energy sector of West Bengal, but it is also expected to give new impetus to oil and gas exploration and production activities in the entire Bengal Basin.

India currently meets a large part of its energy requirements from imported crude oil and gas. In such a situation, domestic discoveries like Ashoknagar can play an important role in reducing the country's import dependence and strengthening energy self-reliance.

Puri also said that this achievement shows the growing potential of the energy sector in West Bengal. Appreciating the efforts being made for the development of hydrocarbon resources in the state, he said that more investment and exploration activities may increase in this area in the coming times.
