If you look closely at the list of apps on your Android phone, you might spot a system component named Android System Intelligence (ASI). While the name suggests it is a crucial system element, there is often little information available about exactly what it does. Notably, many phones offer an option to disable it. This raises the question: what exactly does ASI do, and how does disabling it affect your phone?

What is Android System Intelligence?

Android System Intelligence is a Google system component that helps power various smart features within Android. It is not an app you would normally open and use directly; rather, it is a technology that operates in the background of your phone.

On Google Pixel phones, it supports a range of features, including Live Caption, Now Playing, Smart Autorotate, Screen Attention, App Predictions, enhanced Copy-Paste functionality, and Notification Actions. However, the specific features supported by ASI may vary depending on the manufacturer and the device.

What is the role of ASI on the phone?

You can think of it as the technology driving many of Android's smart features. For instance, the "Now Playing" feature on Pixel phones identifies music playing nearby, while "Screen Attention" prevents the display from turning off while you are looking at the screen.

Similarly, smart notification actions, app suggestions, and advanced copy-paste features rely on Android System Intelligence. On some devices, it also plays a key role in features like Search Live, Live Translate, Assistant Voice Typing, and App Search.

How safe is it for privacy?

Android System Intelligence is designed to work in conjunction with Android's "Private Compute Core"—a system introduced with Android 12. The machine learning components within the Private Compute Core do not connect directly to the internet. Private Compute Services act as a network bridge when information or updates are required from the cloud. According to Google, data such as crash reports, diagnostics, and device-related information is collected via ASI and Private Compute Services for app analytics. However, users can disable the "Usage & Diagnostics" data collection.

Why does ASI require so many permissions?

It is worth noting that many users are concerned when they see the permissions requested by ASI. According to Google, these system permissions are used to provide smart suggestions and predictions; for instance, contact information is used to suggest people you interact with frequently.

However, not every feature requires every permission. If you are concerned about a specific permission, it is better to manage that specific feature's permission rather than disabling Android System Intelligence entirely.
