You may feel as though you’ve drawn the short straw when it’s your turn to tackle the bathroom. But if you’re dreading scrubbing the loo, there’s a ‘weird’ step that most people overlook that can make the whole task considerably easier, while ensuring your cleaning is going to actually make a huge difference to the way that your bathroom looks when you’ve finished.
When cleaning the toilet, most people fail to dust it first, yet one TikTok cleaner insists it’s an essential step. User @home_reimagined explained: “This is your reminder to deep clean your toilet.
“I know it seems weird, but as with any cleaning, you need to start by dusting the toilet first”, she explained. It’s a step that many simply skip.
Neglecting this crucial stage means you’ll just be “pushing wet debris around”, which is far from ideal if you’re after a spotless bathroom that you can be proud of when guests visit.
Toilet cleaning tip
The social media user recommended giving everything a wipe with “a duster you can toss or wash afterwards” to help keep everything hygienic.
They then added: “Spray and wipe all exteriors, including the flushing handle and all the nooks and crannies of the toilet. Grab some paper towels and wipe the top and underside of the seats.”
She continued: “Fill the inside of the bowl with toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing, making sure to get under the lip of the toilet.”
Finally, you’ll need to “flush and rinse the toilet bowl scrubber in fresh water. Spray to disinfect if needed”. And there you have it, a loo that looks sparkling and clean again!
The housework whiz also offered a useful tip regarding the brush, adding: “Let the brush dry fully between the seats before putting it away to avoid mould and bacteria growth in the brush holder.”
In the comments section, readers expressed gratitude for her advice, with some even asserting that they clean their toilets this way “every day”.
One responded: “Love all your cleaning tips.” Another said: “I use Q-tips to get into the crevices instead of removing the toilet seat.”
And a third added: Yes! I use my swiffer to clean off the dust on the toilet first too!”
