Almost out of nowhere, All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving seems to have hit the trade market, albeit unofficially.

It appears that teams are closely monitoring his situation with the Dallas Mavericks next season. The Mavericks might him at the most opportune time for a very good reason, and it’s not his age.

Irving is 34 years old, but age is not necessarily the most compelling reason as to why Dallas should start thinking about life without the nine-time All-Star. If anything, it his injury concern that warrants a closer look from the front office.

Following an ACL tear in the 2024-25 season, Irving failed to log a single minute last season. While he did recover in time to return to the hardwood, that need never really arose given that the Mavs were already out of playoff contention when he was available to return.

Sure, age might get paraded as the overarching reason for why Dallas could make Irving available, but the Mavericks have never been the kind of franchise to double down on age differences and timeline incompatibility. If anything, Cooper Flagg and Irving complement each other. It simply comes down to the latter no longer being a tenable sidekick to the former due to the injury risk he carries.

Irving’s game is predicated on skill and not athleticism, but he still needs his extraordinary burst to remain an elite and dynamic point guard. No one really knows how he will look when he returns to the floor, but at this juncture, the Mavericks would probably be more concerned about the fact that he sustained a debilitating injury as opposed to his age.
