Galatasaray submit bid for Martinelli

As per reports, Galatasaray have contacted Arsenal to discuss the terms of a possible move for Martinelli before the new season begins. Reports from Turkey claim the reigning champions have already put forward an offer worth about £34 million for the Brazil international.

Arsenal, though, have made it plain that they are not prepared to consider selling Martinelli until they have first signed a new attacker for the left flank. The club had earlier explored an ambitious move for Vinicius Junior, underlining their clear intention to improve their options out wide. Martinelli found it difficult to deliver consistently last season, scoring only one Premier League goal in 30 appearances. Even so, he is understood to be happy at the club at present.

New signings increase competition

Arsenal have already added Tzolis to the squad this summer, and the Greece international has operated as the main starter on the left during pre-season. Tzolis marked his debut with a goal in the 4-1 win over Girona and also registered an assist in a recent meeting with Real Betis. His arrival, along with the weekend confirmation that Guimaraes has joined Arsenal, underlines the club's aggressive approach in the market.

Martinelli is keen to play regular first-team football in order to compete at the highest level. Although he is settled in London, the real possibility of slipping further down the pecking order because of more attacking additions could yet influence his view on a move to Galatasaray.

Arteta demands further improvements

Arteta spoke to the media after the victory over Girona and suggested that more transfer business could follow soon. "We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously," Arteta said. "We want to get better like anybody else, and you just can see the transfer market and our opponents, what ‌we are doing. We won't sit still, and we are very ambitious with what we are doing. The margins are very small. Because we want to get better, and the level is going to increase. We need to increase the competition internally. We need to make sure we identify the things that we ‌don't have in the team."

What next for Martinelli?

Arsenal will press on with their pre-season work while keeping a close eye on the transfer market for another top-class winger. If they manage to land a suitable target in the coming weeks, Galatasaray are likely to step up their efforts to sign Martinelli. Until then, the forward will have to battle to win back his starting place and show Arteta his value before the upcoming Premier League season gets under way.
