At some stage of growing up, children suddenly learn to respond verbally. Sometimes sarcastic comments, sometimes harsh words, sometimes just plain defiance. In this type of behavior, parents may not understand how to respond to the situation. Good words do not work, and bad words do the opposite.
Today's parenting experts feel that such situations should be answered calmly and intelligently rather than getting angry. It is better not to say anything that hurts the child's dignity even if it is very annoying. In such situations, the aim should be to teach the child the importance of personal boundaries, self-control and respect rather than punishment (Parenting Tips).
1. “When you can speak respectfully, I will listen.”
Children often do this to get attention. If the word can be said politely enough, the child will calm down even if he doesn't hear the first word. If the parent is calm rather than angry, the child also learns that being in control does not mean yelling.
2. “It was a bit rude to hear that. Will you say it again?”
This soft but firm response helps the child understand his speech style, without labeling him as 'bad'. Instead of long speeches, such words reached his ears easily. Sometimes in moments of anger, children do not understand how their speech sounds to others.
3. “You can be angry, but you can't talk disrespectfully to elders.”
This will teach the child to understand the difference between feelings and behavior. Although this did not enter his mind at first, he will understand once his anger cools down. Expressing anger, sadness or frustration is perfectly normal, but that does not give anyone the right to disrespect someone. In this way the child learns self-control and empathy.

4. “We'll talk about it when we both calm down.”
In heated situations, verbal arguments may escalate from both sides. It is important to say 'we' and not 'I' here. In this, the child realizes that adults, like him, have problems controlling their emotions. However, if there is love for the person on the other side, an attempt to understand better by suppressing the anger is created by itself.
